PRODUCTION NOTES:
Torchwood House was actually filmed in four seperate locations:
Tredegar House in Newport, Treowen Manor in Monmouth, Llansannor Court in Glamorgan and Penllyn Castle in Cowbridge.

THE FOES:
The Werewolf is as the Doctor describes it a "Lupine Wavelength Haemovariform. It has been roaming the Scottish Highlands for 300 years before it's eventual meeting with the Doctor and Rose. During this time it has been using human 'Hosts'. A lot of these hosts have been local children who have been kidnapped by monks from the local monastery. The monks at St Catherine's don't worship God, they worship the Werewolf and have been stealing the children on it's orders.
The Werewolf was created by The Mill using CGI.

THE FRIENDS:
Torchwood House's owner Sir Robert sacrifices himself to the Werewolf to allow the Doctor, Rose and Queen Victoria to have time to flee and this time allows them the chance to trap the werewolf in the observatory.
Queen Victoria honours the Doctor and Rose with royal titles, but she is appalled by their dangerous adventures and banishes them from the British Empire.
In remembrance of Sir Robert's sacrifice Queen Victoria orders the creation of the Torchwood Institute to ensure that Great Britain is defended from future alien attacks.

FACTS:

  • Although this story sees the birth of Torchwood, the top secret organisation, its name was first mentioned as the answer to a quiz question in Series One's Bad Wolf.
  • Pauline Collins returned to Doctor Who after a 40-year absence. She previously appeared as Samantha Briggs in The Faceless Ones, and was offered (but declined) the role of a companion.
  • The last werewolf to feature in Doctor Who was Maggs in The Greatest Show In The Galaxy. Maggs was played by Jessica Martin, who returned to voice the Queen in Voyage Of The Damned.
  • The Doctor adopts the alias James McCrimmon in this episode, a reference to the brave Highlander who became companion to his second incarnation. He also claims to come from Balamory, the fictional village in the popular children's TV show of the same name.
  • This is the only time that David Tennant played the Doctor using his native Scottish accent.
  • The initial meeting between the Doctor and Queen Victoria initiates the running joke of the Tenth Doctor saying, "No, no, don't do that," to discourage his companions from attempting local accents. Martha in The Shakespeare Code and The Infinite Quest and Donna Noble in The Unicorn and the Wasp and Midnight have both been chastised by the Doctor.
  • The Doctor previously defeated an enemy using the combined power of light and diamonds in The Horror Of Fang Rock (1977) where he brought down a Rutan ship.
  • This is the first time the Doctor has been officially knighted, The Fifth Doctor was, however, knighted by the robot Kamelion, impersonating King John I in The King's Demons (1983).
  • As well as mistletoe, werewolves can be affected or killed by silver bullets.
